Only One-inch Tall (ages 5-10)

Here’s what you’ll need:

Here’s what you do:

  1. Talk to your child about what it would be like to be an inchworm.
  2. Get down on the floor together on your hands and knees and crawl around to see what an inchworm might see.
  3. Fold a sheet of paper into fourths and ask your child to think of a title for a story about what would happen to him if he turned into an inchworm.
  4. On the top left section ask your child to write down the title of the story.
  5. On the top right section write, “First”, leaving room for a sentence.
  6. On the bottom left section write, “Next”, again leaving room for a sentence.
  7. On the bottom right section write, “Last”, also leaving room for a sentence.
  8. Ask your child write a simple adventure story about what would happen to him if he suddenly turned into an inchworm.
  9. Tell him to use the words “First”, “Next”, and “Last”, to start each new section of the story.
  10. Ask your child to illustrate each section once it is complete. For example:

First, I saw two gigantic feet walking towards me! I nearly got squashed!
Next, I spent an hour crawling over a huge bone.
Finally, a magic fairy found me and turned back to my normal size.
