This is a simple way for your child to learn to read and spell the names of the people in his family.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Paper
- Pencil
- Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
- Stapler
Here’s what you do:
- Help your child make a list of all the members in your family.
- On a separate sheet of paper, at the bottom, write, “My name is (your child’s name).” Above this sentence ask him to draw a picture of himself.
- On the next page, at the bottom, write, “My mother’s (or guardian’s) name is ____.” Again, ask your child to draw a picture to match the sentence.
- Staple the pages together when every family member has a page.
REMEMBER: If your child is just learning to write sentences, ask him to put a “finger space” between each word so he can read the words easily. Also, remind him to start each sentence with a capital letter and end each with a period.
Other Ideas:
- If you have a camera handy, you can take pictures of each family member and glue them to the appropriate page instead of asking your child to draw pictures.
- Write a story that begins, “If I had 20 brothers and sisters…”.
