Here’s what you’ll need:
- Paper (stationery works well)
- Pencil
- Your child’s favorite books
- Blanket and pillow
- Stuffed toy
- Treats for children
- Envelopes
- Stamps
- Timer (optional)
Here’s what you do:
- Help your child make invitations for a reading party to send to some of his friends. In the invitation, ask the children to bring their favorite books, a blanket and pillow, and their favorite stuffed animal.
- Have treats ready for the children when they arrive. Once all of the children have arrived, ask them to get comfortable with their blanket, pillow, stuffed animal, and books. (You may want to join them as well. By doing this, you are setting a wonderful example that reading is fun.)
- Pass out the snacks, or put them in a place where the children can reach them without getting up.
- Set aside some time for everyone to read their books quietly while snacking and curled up in their blankets. You may wish to use a timer.
- Once the quiet reading time is over, invite the children, one at a time, to share one of their books with the group. Ask them to tell what their book is about and why they like their book.
- If you have the time and energy, you can also ask the children to dress up as their favorite book character. Again, you may want to join them.
- You can make this activity part of a birthday party, a sleepover, or just to brighten up a boring summer afternoon!
