Thanks for some great ideas! I am beginning to prepare for Fall conferences so I needed that reminder of positive comments! It can be hard sometimes, but I often put myself in the shoes of the parent. How would I feel about what I am about to say?

What great tips for those who instruct children! I'd like to add one: Modeling. Children are great imitators and modeling healthy self esteem can be very effective. Especially for those who are close to the child.

I was the same way when I was a student. I'm sorry if I scared you, but I wish someone would have taught me a few things about parent-teacher conferences. Some parents will be supportive and wonderful from Day One. Others...well...you'll need your list of "good traits" and "helpful suggestions" to get through the meetings.

Don't give up! I'm sure you will do fine. If you have any other questions, I'll be glad to blog on what I know. (That last sentence was weird to me....) Please know that there are plenty of rainbows and flowers in teaching; more than you know now. Best of luck!!!

As an elementary education student, often I only think of the positives that will come with teaching, I'm sure most people do. Then, reality will set in... like this post! I am absolutely petrified that I will need to hold parent-teacher conferences (me, telling a parent that their child is not so perfect!) ...screech... totally frightened!!! Reading this though has opened my eyes to see how one can go about making a bad thing sound not so bad. Also, disciplining kids... I see a classroom as a fairytale land with rainbows and flowers... and then the villain (Miss Clark) comes in and bursts some bubbles. I am coming more to grips with reality as the days pass. Hold out some hope for me!!!
