My son Will started kindergarten on a very sad note. His grandma had died the day before school started, so missed the first week of kindergarten. To make matters worse, he knew no one at his new school, was a week behind in learning “all the rules”, and his heart was still broken about the loss of Grandma.
I was a parent helper and often watched my son play at recess. My heart bled as he played alone while nobody tried to befriend him. Will is a smart boy, so he made up his own stories and tried to entertain himself.
One day, Will came home from school with a huge smile on his face. “A parent helper played ball with me at recess today, Mommy!” he said. I knew that someone had finally noticed his inner sadness and stepped in just enough to make one little boy very happy.
I hope this story encourages teachers and parent helpers who watch children during recess to look for opportunities to be good citizens to the children, just as we try to teach children to be good citizens themselves.
