Here’s a story-writing activity for Halloween (see worksheet example):
- Tell the children that the story does not have to be scary. It can be a silly or funny story if they wish. For example, the first sentence could read, “One time a bunny ran right in front of me as I was walking to school. It ran right over my foot and I yelped because I was so frightened!”
- Explain to the children that if they do invent a scary story that it must not be too scary. Nobody wants the other children to go home and have nightmares!
- Be sure to tell them that bad or “gross” words are prohibited. If they do not know how to replace a gross word that they want to use in their story, give them a thesaurus or have them go to an online thesaurus such as Thesaurus.com.
- You do not have to use a “word box” like I did on the sample worksheet. If you choose to, use words that will work for the children you are teaching.
